about

This piece represents the third in a series of short pieces I composed this past year exploring musical
uses of speech fragments. The master tapes of the recording session for my cello piece, “Atlas...”,
served as the generating material. I found that, in between takes, there were a large number of
interesting vocalizations to be harvested.

As I combed through the tapes I digitally copied fragments of vocal sound- phonemes and morphemes-
and organized them by approximate pitch and by character (word fragment, noise, fricative, vowel). I
also unearthed incidental mechanical sounds, such as the end-pin of the cello hitting the floor and
chairs being dragged across the room.

As I began experimenting, I constructed sonic “tails” flowing from specific vocal sounds. Using Pd, I
constructed tails of various types- evolving colored noise bands, glissandi, and linear ¼ tone sequences.
I then attached these tails to the ends of numerous fricatives, creating hybrid natural/digital sounds.

I expanded, as the piece progressed, my library of speech sounds with recordings of other voices
intoning various noises and words. As the library grew, I also sought a contrasting timbre to use in the
composition. I fixed upon the inharmonic sounds of carillon bells.

In the final stages, I incorporated a cello line to be played by a live performer. Thus, I was able to
create a new context for a bit of the material I had written for “Atlas...” and to add a dynamic element
to this piece that only a live performer could provide.
