about

Pivot is a composition for amplified quartet and computer processed sounds. It is a reaction to the urgency of those calling for action on climate change and the political gridlock they confront.

It is organized as a large fractal, and is meant to be fragmented and crystalline. Contrast is emphasized throughout via constant juxtaposition. The piece is divided into nested sections of three. On the broadest level, for example, the piece is divided into three movements. These movements are in golden section proportions to the whole, and are outlined by changes in musical material and instrumentation. Subsequently, each movement is divided into 3 smaller sections, also determined by the golden section, and each of these sections is divided similarly, down to the divisions of each measure. The piece thus manifests a self-similar structure. Highlighting this form through the variation of musical materials involved extensive pre-compositional labor and one of the purposes of realizing this piece was to explore the results of such a process.

The ensemble is lightly processed in real-time and blended with recordings of acoustic instruments which have been manipulated in the studio to expand their sonic range. Field recordings are also featured prominently, having been processed and edited to create an abstract quilt of contrasting gestures alluding to different environments, from urban to wilderness.
